Robotics with VEX IQ

Robotics with VEX IQProgram Schedule: March 27- May 15This class will meet weekly from 11 a.m.-noon on Fridays.Recommended Ages: 6th-12th gradesThis class will be limited to four students to create a personalized and hands-on experience.Cost: $70 (Members), $90 (Nonmembers)Build, code and bring robots to life in this hands-on and exciting class. Meeting weekly over the semester, students will work in teams of four to design, construct and code their own robots while exploring real-world concepts in engineering, mechanics and computer science. Students will design and test real mechanisms (gears, drivetrains, lifts), explore sensors and learn coding fundamentals to drive and automate their creations. Our approach balances structured instruction with creative challenges, so students can practice collaboration and problem solving while having a lot of fun. This is an introductory course aimed at building confidence with robotics; prior experience is helpful but NOT required. By the end of the semester, students will understand how robots work, how to program them and how engineers think. As students progress through this course they will:Apply the engineering design process to plan, build, test and refine robot prototypes.Explore mechanical systems and mechanisms including gears, lifts and drivetrains.Develop computational thinking and coding fundamentals using VEX IQ programming tools.Strengthen collaboration and communication skills through teamwork and shared problem-solving.Meet the program instructor: Jessica Newsom Ms. Jess founded Inventors Lab to share her love and passion working with students of all ages and backgrounds to develop their skills in STEM-related topics. Jess graduated with her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, where she was also actively involved in creating interactive labs in virtual reality (VR) for the biology department, competing with the Human-Powered Vehicle project team and hosting workshops on how to create aquaponics systems. She has spent the last nine years teaching K-12 robotics while running a center in California, and she has coached VEX Robotics competition teams at the middle school and high school levels. Outside of STEM-related activities, she spends her time in her workshop creating art, developing her own video games, crocheting cute animals, knitting garments and reading. Jess is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others and inspiring them to be creative and tackle cool projects.By purchasing a ticket to this event, you are agreeing to our participant release, participant policies, and social contract.Sign in or register today to become a member of Learning Lab Wichita and receive discounted program and event opportunities!
