Sew It BeginsProgram Schedule: Jan. 9-March 6This class will meet weekly from 2-3 p.m. on Fridays Recommended Ages: 4th-12th gradesStudents must demonstrate appropriate dexterity and an understanding of basic sewing safety to participate. Instructor guidance will be provided, but students should be able to handle sewing tools and equipment responsibly.Cost: $90 (members), $100 (nonmembers)  Ready to stitch your creativity into something real? In Sew It Begins, middle school and high school students will dive into the fundamentals of clothing construction, through hands-on, skill-building projects designed for beginners.Students will gain confidence using a sewing machine and learn to:•    Wind and insert a bobbin, thread the machine and use an automatic needle threader.•    Pull up bobbin thread, adjust stitch width and length and try out decorative stitches.•    Backstitch, sew straight and curved lines, and practice precision and control.•    Sew on a button by hand.•    Construct a pillowcase while learning to:o    Find the grain of the fabric.o    Cut off the selvedge edge.o    Sew French seams for a professional finish.o    Turn under and press a hem before stitching it neatly in place.Whether you are brand new to sewing or ready to level up, this class is the perfect next stop on your maker journey. For students interested in a semester-long experience, pair this class with the continuation of Sew It Begins (Again!), which will be offered during Quarter 4.Meet the program instructor: Lynanne DeGarmoLynanne DeGarmo is a lifelong learner and passionate explorer of the arts, with decades of experience in quilting and sewing. Her art pieces have traveled the United States as part of juried quilt competitions. Lynanne is also a Professional Doll Artist, with her emphasis being the construction of the cloth doll.  She has dedicated much of her time to mentoring young creators through 4-H and other student programs.
