Through a blend of civic literacy, leadership development and applied problem-solving, students explore how communities function, clarify their values and develop the skills to move from concern to action.Students will examine how local government and community systems work, identify challenges they care about and learn how change happens in the real world. The course emphasizes how problems are defined, who is impacted, who has influence and what effective solutions require — not just ideas, but planning, collaboration and follow-through. Students will apply these skills by designing and submitting a project to the MyImpact Challenge that addresses a real community's needs.Learning extends beyond the classroom through real-world experiences like visits to City Hall and the Kansas Leadership Center and conversations with local leaders and guest speakers. Why students should join:Students will gain a deeper understanding of how community issues emerge and what it takes to meaningfully address them. They’ll practice communicating ideas clearly, working through complexity and leading with both empathy and intention. By designing their own MyImpact project, students build confidence, agency and problem-solving skills while seeing how thoughtful action — grounded in values and collaboration —  can create real change. This program is engaging, empowering and rooted in the belief that young people are capable of understanding complexity and contributing solutions now vs. someday.Meet the program instructor: Candice SmithCandice Smith, MBA, is the founder of State of Becoming and brings a decade of experience in youth development, emotional intelligence and leadership coaching.By purchasing a ticket to this event, you are agreeing to our participant release, participant policies, and social contract.Sign in or register today to become a member of Learning Lab Wichita and receive discounted program and event opportunities!
