Pixel Art and Animation

Pixel Art and Animation Program Schedule:  Oct. 23-Dec. 18  This class will meet weekly on Fridays from 2-3 p.m.  Recommended Ages: 6th-12th grades     This class is limited to 12 students.  Cost: $100 (Members), $120 (Nonmembers)  In this class, students learn the art of pixel art, the foundational visual style behind countless video games, and bring their creations to life through animation. Using Piskel, a digital art tool, students will design original characters, build tile-sets for game environments, and create simple movement and effects. Along the way, students take a hands-on break from the screen to recreate their pixel designs using physical crafts, connecting digital design to tactile, real-world making. In the final three weeks, students import their original artwork into GDevelop to build a small interactive project featuring the characters and environments they designed themselves. No prior art or coding experience is required; students just need to bring curiosity and a willingness to experiment. By the end of the course, each student will have a personal portfolio of original digital art and a finished project they can share with friends and family. Meet the program instructor: Jess Newsom Ms. Jess founded Jaja Labs to share her love and passion for working with students of all ages and backgrounds to develop their skills in STEM-related topics. Jess graduated with her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, where she also was actively involved in creating interactive labs in virtual reality (VR) for the biology department, competing with the Human-Powered Vehicle project team and hosting workshops on how to create aquaponics systems. She has spent the last nine years teaching K-12 robotics while running a center in California, and she has coached VEX Robotics competition teams at the middle school and high school levels. Outside of STEM-related activities, Ms. Jess spends her time in her workshop creating art, developing her own video games, crocheting cute animals, knitting garments and reading. Jess is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others and inspiring them to be creative and tackle cool projects. By purchasing a ticket to this event, you are agreeing to our participant release, participant policies, and social contract.Sign in or register today to become a member of Learning Lab Wichita and receive discounted program and event opportunities!
