Hands-On Robotics with micro:bit Maqueen Program Schedule: Oct. 23-Dec. 18 This class will meet weekly on Fridays from 9-10 a.m. Recommended Ages: 3rd-8th grades This class is limited to 10 students. Cost: $135 (Members), $150 (Nonmembers) In this hands-on robotics course, students learn to program the Maqueen Lite robot using micro:bit and MakeCode's drag-and-drop block interface. Sessions start with basic movement and LED/sound control, then progress into loops, conditionals and variables as students learn to use the robot's built-in sensors: line-tracking, ultrasonic distance and light sensors. By the end of the course, students will have programmed their robot to follow a line course, avoid obstacles and respond to its environment in real time. The course wraps up with a final "robot challenge" showcase where students demonstrate a project combining multiple skills learned throughout the session. Designed to be accessible for younger beginners while offering stretch challenges for older or more advanced students, this class builds computational thinking, engineering design skills and confidence with real-world robotics tools through independent, hands-on practice. No prior coding experience is needed. Each student works individually with their own robot and materials, building skills at their own pace. Meet the program instructor: Jess Newsom Ms. Jess founded Jaja Labs to share her love and passion for working with students of all ages and backgrounds to develop their skills in STEM-related topics. Jess graduated with her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from Cal Poly Pomona, where she also was actively involved in creating interactive labs in virtual reality (VR) for the biology department, competing with the Human-Powered Vehicle project team and hosting workshops on how to create aquaponics systems. She has spent the last nine years teaching K-12 robotics while running a center in California, and she has coached VEX Robotics competition teams at the middle school and high school levels. Outside of STEM-related activities, Ms. Jess spends her time in her workshop creating art, developing her own video games, crocheting cute animals, knitting garments and reading. Jess is passionate about sharing her knowledge with others and inspiring them to be creative and tackle cool projects.
