Rooted in StoryProgram Schedule: Sept. 5-Dec. 14 This class will meet weekly from 9-9:45 a.m. on Fridays Recommended Ages: K-5th Grades "The children should have the joy of living in far lands, in other persons, in other times -- a delightful double existence; and this joy they will find, for the most part, in their storybooks." (Charlotte Mason) Sunflower Learning Community's weekly story time for preschool and early elementary children will feature rich stories from cultures around the world. Each week, we will focus on one or two short stories by hearing the story, drawing the story, and acting the story. Each story chosen will ignite the imagination and provide rich ideas about character formation, values, ideals, and ways of living. David Smith writes: "The stories that surround us help to make us what we become. They shape our attitudes to life, form our ideals, and supply our vision. They provide us with identity and ways of living. They furnish us with heroes and antiheroes . . . They are part of the warp and woof of our language and thought, of our whole experience of the world and our way of living."Storytime includes engaging activities that build key pre-reading skills such as active listening, story retelling, phonological awareness, and imaginative thinking. Classic nursery rhymes and poetry are also incorporated. This program supports Kansas English Language Arts Standards (WK1–3, SLK1–2, RFK2, RLK1–3, RLK13, P1.1–1.5, P6.1–6.2) and aligns with Social-Emotional, Character Development, and History/Government/Social Studies Standards.Meet the program instructor: Darby Breaux-VickersDarby Breaux-Vickers of Sunflower Learning Community has engaged with children for over 10 years and recently completed a Master of the Arts in Religions Studies.
