From Story to Shelf Program Schedule: Oct. 23-Dec. 18 This class will meet weekly from 2-3 p.m. on Fridays. Recommended Ages: 3rd-5th grades This class is limited to 15 students. Cost: $125 (Members), $150 (Nonmembers) Every great book begins with a single idea. In From Story to Shelf, young writers in grades 3-5 will transform their imagination into a professionally published children's book while learning the complete journey, from author to entrepreneur. Over eight weeks, students will brainstorm story ideas, develop memorable characters, write and revise their manuscripts with guidance from the instructor, create illustrations and prepare their books for publication. But the journey doesn't end when the book is printed. Students will also explore the business side of being an author by learning about pricing, branding, customer service and book promotion. Each child will have the opportunity to sell copies of his or her published book through The Society of Child Entrepreneurs' retail space, at a Children's Business Fair or both, giving kids real-world experience as published authors and young entrepreneurs. By the end of the program, every student will proudly hold their own published book, celebrate becoming a first-time author and leave with the confidence that their words, creativity and ideas have the power to make an impact. Meet the program instructor: Leah Ellis Leah Ellis is an educator, nonprofit leader and entrepreneur dedicated to empowering youth through creativity, financial literacy and real-world experience. As founder and executive director of The Society of Child Entrepreneurs (SoCE), Leah helps students ages 6-17 turn ideas into businesses, develop leadership skills and gain lifelong entrepreneurial and emotional intelligence skills. Leah created “Ignite. Empower. Lead.,” a 36-week curriculum integrating storytelling, hands-on learning and national standards. Her children’s book series, “Astra & Zeke,” introduces business concepts through engaging narratives. Leah collaborates with schools and community programs to expand enrichment opportunities, and she advocates for youth entrepreneurship initiatives, including the proposed SoCE Law in Kansas.
