Beginning Spanish 1 Schedule: Jan. 9 - March 6This class will meet from 1 - 2 p.m. weekly on Fridays  Recommended Participants: 3rd-12th Grades All beginning Spanish speakers are welcome to attend this class section. Beginning Spanish 1 is an introductory Spanish language course taught using several communicative methods, such as Total Physical Response (TPR) and Teaching Proficiency through Reading and Storytelling (TPRS). No prior knowledge of Spanish is needed to take the course. Students are encouraged to try their best and proceed at their own pace. Mistakes are a normal and necessary part of language development. Attendees can expect to learn... Communication: We will focus primarily on listening, speaking and reading in Spanish. There may also be some writing. The teacher will speak Spanish in the classroom, and students will use Spanish at their own level. Vocabulary: High frequency Spanish words will be targeted, especially the most used nouns and verbs. Grammar: Students will be introduced to basic verb conjugations. Movement: Students will acquire vocabulary through associating phrases with physical movement (Total Physical Response or TPR). Storytelling: The class will collaborate to create and act out original stories together in Spanish (Teaching Proficiency Through Reading and Storytelling or TPRS). Reading: Students may be required to do some light reading in Spanish at home as their fluency grows.Meet the program instructor: Kate Swartley  Kate Swartley has a bachelor’s degree in social work from Goshen College and a master's degree in Spanish from Bowling Green State University. She taught Spanish for seven years at five different universities (BGSU, Indiana University-Purdue University Fort Wayne, Bluffton [OH] University, Hesston College and Bethel College) as well as community classes for adults. She has worked as an ESL teaching assistant at the elementary school level and a social worker at the middle school and preschool levels. Kate has studied and lived abroad in the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Spain and Japan.
