Sprout’s Guild: Homeschool Enrichment Program Program Schedule: Jan. 14 - March 4  This program meets weekly on Wednesdays.  Recommended Ages: K-5th Grades Cost: $300 (Full Day), $80 (per individual topic sessions) Guild (noun):  a group of people who come together in pursuit of a common interest Sprout’s Guild is a program for learners ages 6-12 to join forces in their pursuit of knowledge. Together we will learn about ourselves, the world around us and our place in it. We will explore the natural world, our language and people who have come before us. We will support one another, persevere through difficulties and grow every day. Students may register for one or multiple subjects. This program is best for ages 6-12, but students younger or older may be admitted on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us for more information. 10-11 a.m.  Science (Sky, Atmosphere and Weather) This science class incorporates hands-on exploration and experiments, nature study and the arts to help students deepen their understanding of the world around them. This quarter, students will explore the sky and weather, learning about clouds, rain, the water cycle and more. Students will practice scientific skills like making observations, recording data and analyzing patterns. 11 a.m. - Noon  History (The Beginning of Time) We're going WAY BACK! Explore history from the very beginning: the start of the universe itself. Students will learn about the origins of the universe, our solar system and planet earth, the beginning of life and how it changed, the dinosaurs and early humans. Then, we'll explore the lives of those earliest humans, with the creation of writing and mathematics, agriculture and civilization. Students will visit those early civilizations to learn about life in Norte Chico, the Indus Valley, ancient Egypt and more. (Optional activities to extend learning will be sent home.) 1-2 p.m.  Reading & Language Arts This course will build reading and writing skills for elementary students using a blend of Orton-Gillingham, Montessori and Charlotte Mason methods. For younger elementary (K-2nd grades): Young children will develop pre-reading and reading skills like sound blending, story sequencing, phonemic awareness and rhyming. A multi-sensory approach builds letter recognition, letter writing and word-building. Advancing students increase their understanding of English letter teams and rules of the English language. For older elementary (3-5th grades): Lessons will improve reading fluency, spelling, handwriting and grammar. Students will practice reading, build confidence in spelling by understanding the rules of language, improve handwriting and increase their understanding of English grammar. For both age groups, rich literature like stories and poetry will help children develop a love of reading, build vocabulary and expose students to wonderful ideas. Students will be given recommended activities to complete at home between class meetings. 2-3:30 p.m. Movie Club Enjoy crafts, games, snacks and more based on your favorite movies! Each week will feature one character or a group of friends. This program will use favorite stories, characters and music to develop social skills, fine and gross motor skills and more. Meet the program instructor: Darby Breaux-Vickers, Sunflower Learning Community Darby Breaux-Vickers of Sunflower Learning Community has engaged with children for more than 10 years and recently completed a Master of the Arts in Religions Studies. Darby is passionate about engaging students in impactful and immersive learning experiences for her students to promote cultural literacy and respect for diversity.
